A city car for Marrakech traffic

Between the avenues of Guéliz, the big roundabouts and the edges of the Medina, a compact car slips through more easily than an SUV. It also fits into the tight spaces of the guarded car parks around the old city, where a larger vehicle means turning round several times.

Manual diesel or automatic petrol

The range splits into two families. On one side, manual diesel models, economical on repeated round trips: the Dacia Sandero, the Renault Clio 5 Manuelle or the Hyundai i20. On the other, automatic petrol cars for those who would rather not work the clutch in the evening traffic jams: the Peugeot 208 Auto and the Renault Clio 5 Automatique.

Hatchback or saloon

All offer 5 seats and 4 doors. The difference lies in the boot: saloons like the Dacia Logan keep luggage out of sight in a separate boot, handy when you stop for lunch on the road. Hatchbacks are shorter and easier to manoeuvre in the streets of Agdal or around the station.

How far can you go in a small car?

For Lalla Takerkoust, the Ourika valley or a day in Essaouira, a well-loaded city car stays comfortable for two or three people. The fuel budget stays low, which matters on a week-long stay. If you are four adults with big suitcases, or if your plans include the Atlas passes, look at the standard cars instead. In town, remember that the Medina is visited on foot: our guide to parking near the Medina gathers the good habits.

FAQ

Questions about city cars

Another question?
Do three suitcases fit in a small car?

In most models, yes: the Sandero, Logan, Clio 5, 208 and i20 are rated for 3 bags. The Opel Corsa and Hyundai Accent take 2 more comfortably. For three large hard-shell suitcases plus backpacks, the Dacia Logan with its saloon boot is the simplest choice.

Can a city car drive up to Setti Fatma in the Ourika valley?

Yes. The Ourika road is paved and follows the river for about 65 km from Marrakech; allow 1 h 15 to 1 h 30. It becomes more winding towards the end, with no particular difficulty for a small car. Drive calmly through the villages, where pedestrians and animals often cross.

Diesel or petrol: which engine for a city car?

The diesel city cars (Sandero, Logan, Clio 5 Manuelle, Corsa, i20) all have a manual gearbox and suit long distances. The petrol ones (Peugeot 208, Clio 5 Automatique, Hyundai Accent) are all automatic. The choice therefore mostly comes down to the gearbox: automatic for town, diesel if you plan to drive a lot.

Is a small car suitable for reaching Essaouira, Agadir or Casablanca?

Yes, as long as you do not overload the boot. Casablanca and Agadir are reached by the A7 toll motorway, where the speed limit is 120 km/h. Essaouira is about 190 km by road, i.e. 2 h 30 to 3 h. A diesel city car means fewer stops at the pump.

Can four adults travel in a city car?

The five seats are real, but four adults with luggage quickly fill a small car. For trips in town or half a day at Agafay, it works without a problem. For several hours on the road with suitcases, a standard car or an SUV leaves more leg room and boot space.

Saloon or hatchback: what is the everyday difference?

The Dacia Logan and Hyundai Accent are saloons: the boot is separate from the cabin and luggage stays invisible from outside. Hatchback models, like the Sandero or the Clio, are shorter and so easier to park in the narrow streets of Guéliz. The daily price is the same.

Is it easy to park in Guéliz with a small car?

Easier than with an SUV, yes. Guéliz has street parking and car parks, often watched by an attendant in a vest. A short car fits into the tight spots that larger models leave empty. Just avoid parking in front of an exit or a doorway: obstructive parking can earn you a fine.

Why do all small cars show the same price?

The category is offered at a single daily price, whatever the model. You therefore choose according to your real needs, with no budget compromise: automatic or manual gearbox, diesel or petrol, saloon or hatchback, 2 or 3 bags. The exact price appears on each listing and in your request.

Hyundai i20 or Opel Corsa: which one to take?

Both are manual diesel hatchbacks with 5 seats. The i20 has a 1.4 L engine and takes 3 bags, the Corsa a 1.2 L for 2 bags. If you arrive with suitcases, the i20 is more practical; for a light, city-based stay, the Corsa is enough.

Is it better to take two city cars or a van for a group of eight?

Two small cars give flexibility: each half of the group can follow its own plans, and parking spaces are easier to find. An 8 or 9-seater van keeps everyone together and avoids paying for fuel twice. If you stay together, the van is often simpler.
